Celebrating its fifth year, Austin-born Anriquaria Design Studio presents a new spring stationery collection, inspired by the Southwest.
In the modern era of stream-of-conscious text messages and e-mails, the simple act of producing a thoughtful, handwritten note doesn’t go unnoticed. Meet Emma James and Bailey Amon Rivera, the talented artists and entrepreneurs behind Antiquaria Design Studio. While they’re known across the country (thanks to the power of Pinterest and popular paper blogs) for their custom, vintage-inspired wedding invitation designs, Austin is where it all began for these two.
The idea of working together came in 2009—when James, an illustrator and print designer, who had recently relocated to Austin from New York, met Austin calligrapher Rivera and hired her to collaborate on the wedding invitations she was designing for herself. “We never thought we’d be doing it for a living,” James recalls, “but we just worked so well together.”
In 2010, the duo launched Antiquaria, a business of curating vintage, mix-and-match china. Meanwhile, the Oh So Beautiful Paper blog featured James’s custom wedding designs, and suddenly the two were fielding hundreds of requests from brides wanting their own custom invitations. “That started it all—we expanded so quickly,” James says. They liquidated all of their antique china and officially decided to focus on the antiquated art of paper: from custom invitations to notebooks and art prints.
The two launched a line of greeting cards this past August and began wholesaling at Luxe Apothetique locally and 24 other stores nationally; this spring, Anthropologie picked up one of their “thank you” card designs. Now celebrating Antiquaria’s fifth year, the power paper duo has launched a new collection for spring, including a set of greeting cards with abstract art and charming gold-foil details, and a watercolor “Out West” collection, inspired by the Southwest.
What’s next for this in-demand pair? “We’ll be debuting wrapping paper later this year,” James reveals, along with plans to explore selling custom stationery sets. 512-789-4479
