The best way to beat the heat this summer? Taking in a live concert. From Steely Dan and Elvis Costello, to Lady Antebellum and Florida Georgia Line, here are a few shows coming through the “Live Music Capital of the World” that are worth checking out this season.
Indie pop singer/songwriter Ingrid Michaelson starts the summer off right at Austin City Limits Live on June 8 (tickets on acl-live.com). After that, Emo's has all the top acts. First up on the 17th is Neon Trees, known for their energetic shows and can’t-help-but-sing-along hits like “Animal” and “Everybody Talks” (tickets on emosaustin.com), followed by Alabama-born rap powerhouse YelaWolf on the 18th (tickets on emosaustin.com). To round out the month at Emo's, mellow rock duo Best Coast performs on the 23rd (tickets on emosaustin.com). Actor and fan Bill Murray showed up to their SXSW showcase, so maybe he’ll make another appearance?
The perfect combination of alternative rock bands that defined many an adolescence, Third Eye Blind and Dashboard Confessional come together on the July 3 for a show at the Cedar Park Center (tickets on cedarparkcenter.com). On July 4th, celebrate the birth of our nation with legend Willie Nelson and friends at his picnic at Circuit of the Americas (tickets on circuitoftheamericas.com). Catch Matchbox Twenty frontman Rob Thomas going solo with the Plain White Ts on the 12th at ACL Live (tickets on ticketfly.com). Or, enjoy the sweet strumming of Swedish folk sensations First Aid Kit, who are playing Stubb’s on the 16th (tickets on frontgatetickets.com). Classic rockers Steely Dan and Elvis Costello are sure to bring down the house at the Austin360 Amphitheater on the 17th, playing hits from over four decades of music (tickets on austin360amphitheater.com).
If you know any Frozen fans, take them to hear “Let It Go” live when Idina Menzel descends upon Bass Concert Hall on August 1 (tickets on texasperformingarts.org). If country is more your style, superstars Shania Twain and Gavin DeGraw are promising an unforgettable party at the Frank Erwin Center on the 9th (tickets on uterwincenter.com). Meanwhile, Grammy Award-winning crooner Sam Smith will tug at heartstrings with songs like “I Know I’m Not The Only One” at the Frank Erwin Center on the 15th (tickets on uterwincenter.com). And, for a family-friendly day of music, fun, and flying mammals, check out Bat Fest on the Congress Ave. Bridge on the 22nd (tickets $10 at the gate).
Blues on the Green (free): A summer outing favored by locals, KGSR is hosting a series of performers at Zilker Park. This year’s lineup includes Shakey Graves (6/24), Bob Schneider (7/22), and Max Frost (8/5). We recommend bringing blankets and plenty of bug spray.
