We caught up with celebrity-approved skincare expert Renée Rouleau to get her suggestions on the best beauty products for every skin type.
Normal, oily, dry, and combination skin are not the only types out there—in fact, there are nine different kinds according to Renée Rouleau, an Austin-based celebrity esthetician who's worked with the likes of Sofía Vergara and Demi Lovato.
"Through my 'hands-on' work, I continued to see the same nine types of skin over and over again," says Rouleau, who offers a quiz to determine your type on her recently revamped site. Consumers can also shop her eponymous skincare line and peruse her blog, which features advice on a slew of skin issues. "Every person’s skin is truly unique," she says, "and to get the best results, all needs should be addressed." Aside from her beauty tips to great skin for Austinites, the skincare expert breaks down each type and the ingredients you should look for.

If you're constantly breaking out, opt for clarifying and balancing products that will clear your pores and offer antiseptic benefits. Rouleau suggests her AHA/BHA Blemish Control Cleanser, which boosts Salicylic and Lactic Acids to exfoliate the skin—clear acne-causing congestion and fade post-breakout scarring. Follow that with a non-drying toner like Rouleau's Balancing Skin Tonic, which contains ingredients like tea tree and witch hazel that "disinfect, calm, and control oil."

If you have combination skin (meaning you’re oily in the t-zone but need moisture in other areas), sometimes experience mild breakouts, and are concerned about aging—you probably fall into this category. Try Rouleau’s Sheer Moisture Lotion, an oil-free, anti-aging moisturizer with antioxidants and skin brighteners like vitamin C. "This skin needs hydration without heavy oils or pore-clogging ingredients," explains Rouleau.

To keep the skin blemish-free, hydrated, and non-irritated, reach for products with a careful blend of antibacterial and smoothing BHAs (exfoliating acids like Salicylic that work to unclog pores), says Rouleau. Go for a gentle and exfoliating cleanser, and follow with a clarifying serum like her BHA Clarifying Serum that will clear pores, lift discoloration, and reduce acne-causing bacteria three times a week.
Skin Correcting Serum, Renée Rouleau ($49). reneerouleau.com
While this skin experiences blemishes and cysts, this skin type doesn't experience it as often as #3. Start with a salicylic acid-boosting BHA Clarifying Serum to exfoliate and reduce breakouts for three nights in a row, followed by another three nights with the Skin Correcting Serum, which will calm the skin and target acne from deep within with its natural compound, beta glucan.

If your skin gets irritated easily, looks consistently red, is dehydrated often, and shows signs of aging, this is most likely your skin type. To soothe and nourish, search for products with high concentrations of magnesium ascorbyl phosphate (aka the no-sting vitamin c), white tea, and red marine algae. "Smoothing exfoliates and calming bioactive ingredients keep this skin strengthened from the inside out," Rouleau says. “[Plus,] sunscreen is the most effective anti-aging product available since the number one cause of premature wrinkles is from daily UV rays.”
Firm + Repair Overnight Serum, Renée Rouleau ($73). reneerouleau.com
Looking for that #dewyglow? Find products made with rosemary and peppermint. "Think mint to instantly refresh and brighten tired skin," says Rouleau, who also points out her Luxe Mint Cleansing Gel. But if your other concern is to attack signs of aging skin head-on, look to antioxidants—great for smoothing out wrinkles and brightening your complexion. Rouleau also recommends her Firm + Repair Overnight Serum containing superfruits like gogi fruit, mangosteen, and pomegranate to decrease inflammation molecules that contribute to loss of firmness.

"Use a serum that multi-tasks to clear pores, lift discoloration from sun, hormones, and blemishes, and reduce the appearance of fine lines," she says. The Pore + Wrinkle Serum offers a blend of exfoliating AHAs to smooth and hydrate the skin. You also can't go wrong with products that use ginseng and red rice culture extract, which increase oxygenation and give your skin a beautiful glow.
Pro Remedy Oil, Renée Rouleau ($69). reneerouleau.com
If you fall into this category, reach for the oil. "This skin type benefits from a light-weight oil for intensive repair and hydration," Rouleau explains. "Pro Remedy Oil contains 12 carefully-selected natural oils for exceptional barrier repair benefits to dry, parched skin in need of moisture." It also includes a generous amount of antioxidants to protect your skin from free radicals, and combat signs of premature aging.
Moisture Infusion Toner, Renée Rouleau ($43). reneerouleau.com
This skin type requires a high concentration of barrier repair, lipid-rich natural oils, and comforting botanicals to soothe and strengthen your skin, says Rouleau. Look for ingredients like sea whip, stable vitamin c, and bioactive peptides to improve redness and calm the skin. After your cleanser, use a hydrating toner like her Moisture Infusion Toner, which activates a serum-infused formula with natural botanicals and essential vitamins to increase moisture from within.
