The term “bachelor pad” had its heyday in the cosmopolitan 1960s. Today, interior designer Kelly LaPlante and architect Kristen James of Situate, a referral-based Austin design firm, aim to imbue the single man’s apartment with the sleek cool of yore.
They launched their firm in the fall, offering services such as coordinating all the necessary minutiae of move-ins, from furniture deliveries to cable installation, and providing their acclaimed interior design services geared toward the urbane Austin man (think industrial surfaces meet Mad Men sophistication). And with LaPlante’s background in eco-design, Situate melds its mid-century modern aesthetic with a green ethos.
But the centerpiece of Situate is Bar A La Carte, its curated bar-design-and-stocking service, ranging from $1,200 to $12,000, that creates a cocktail space with tailored features including vintage barware, glassware, and handsome carts, custom-made with repurposed furniture and built-in cabinetry. Beyond being an eye-catching conversation piece, the home bar is a natural canvas for personal expression. As James says, “from your preference in Scotch or whiskey to what you like to mix in a pinch, or if you are a serious wine drinker, your bar says so much about you.”
