What are the Second Street District’s hottest hangouts? Rochelle Rae, owner and CEO of Rae Cosmetics, shares her favorites.
Rochelle Rae of Rae Cosmetics.
Rochelle Rae, an award-winning makeup artist, has made a name for herself since opening her store Rae Cosmetics(237 W. Second St., 512-320-8732) in 2008. Her products, which are heat- and sweat-resistant, lightweight, and contain nutrients, antioxidants, and nonchemical sunscreens, were an instant hit with Austin women. Rae Cosmetics recently moved to the trendy Second Street District, and offers makeup and hair services, along with educational how-to sessions and on- or off-site makeup parties.
We caught up with Rae to find out how she spends her time in the Second Street District when she’s not hard at work.
Where do you go for brunch? ROCHELLE RAE: Over the last couple of years, brunch at Trace(W Austin, 200 Lavaca St., 512-542-3660) on either Saturday or Sunday has sort of become a girls’ day out tradition. [Having] mimosas on the beautiful patio is a perfect [way] to sip the day away.
Where's your favorite place for an after-work cocktail? RR: Cru(238 W. Second St., 512-472-9463)—they have a great wine selection. I can jump right across the street after work and enjoy a glass on the patio.
Where do you go when you need a pick-me-up during the day? RR: If I’m feeling decadent and want to throw calorie caution to the wind, I go grab macarons (or anything) at Delish(209 W. Third St., 512-473-4118). If I'm being diligent about fitting into my skinny jeans, the best calorie-free pick-me-up is the makeup chair at Rae Cosmetics—even I love to have someone else do my makeup.
Where do you go for clothing in the area? RR: Well, there are two types of clothing I love. For the clothes that everyone can see, I love Estilo(234 W. Second St., 512-236-0488). There is such a wide variety of styles and there always seems to be a new selection of awesome pieces for day or night. Then there are the clothes that not everyone can see, but make you feel so good to wear. Teddies for Bettys(221 W. Second St., 512-614-2103) is hands-down the most fun place to shop. The quality and detail of the lingerie is amazing. I think the owner, Ashley, travels the world to find the most exciting collections.
Where's your favorite place for a nice meal out? RR: La Condesa(400 W. Second St., 512-499-0300). Seafood and salsa are my two favorite food groups. They have five perfect ceviches, and four salsas to spice up everything else just the way I like it.
What about a quick weekday lunch? RR: Taverna(258 W. Second St., 512-477-1001) is a perfect place for lunch. They have great pizzas and salad served family-style. Being right across the street, it is where the Rae Cosmetics family often does lunch.
Where do you go when you want to treat yourself? RR: The AWAY Spa at the W(200 Lavaca St., 512-542-3626). Locals get 30 percent off all services Monday through Thursday and 10 percent off Friday through Sunday. Go for a massage or a facial and then relax at the pool after—can't beat that for a treat!
Citywide, where are you most likely to be on a Saturday night? RR: I might go to Uchiko(4200 N. Lamar Blvd., 512-916-4808) for dinner and then slide back downtown to meet friends.
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be? RR: Oh my, such a hard question. I have been traveling a lot lately and seen some beautiful places, but it is always nice to come home to Austin, Texas.
