A statesman means good samaritan. The Statesman owner, Craig Ley, wanted to let the people of ATX know they are here to add to the community and join in on the Austin culture—a refreshing addition to the Austin map. The atmosphere is swanky and fresh. Sitting proudly on West Sixth, it is at the high point of downtown. The restaurant/bar concept attracts stylish Austinites who like a nicely made drink and a mouthwatering menu.

Opening night, celebrities came in troves, and everyone was ecstatic to have a new spot to go for a night out that had food as delicious as its drinks. Plates were passed around, and meatballs were pounded down, the perfect mix of a little kick and a lot of flavor. The crunchy mozzarella sticks were a crowd favorite alongside opening bites and went quick. Tuna Tartare in a crisp lettuce cup made for the most refreshing bite before moving on to the entrees.

Actor and fellow Austinite Jared Padalecki couldn’t resist the steaming sight of my brown butter tagliatelli, and as he had a bite, his eyes widened in flavor heaven. Coming from an Italian, I think this place really can make good pasta. When asked what type of cuisine it houses, a rep for the restaurant answered, “American with a slight Italian addition. Basically, we want people to be comfortable being a regular and never feel like they are eating the same food over and over again.” They certainly succeeded as each item had a different spin and yet could easily be paired together.

Hands down, they have the best new burger in Austin. The layers were perfect, and the meat was delectable. “You have to try the burger,” was the anthem of the evening. Bacon onion jam sits finely among the sharp white cheddar and secret burger sauce, making the perfect bite each time. It is a must-have with the Pommes Paillason, the most crunchy potatoes with sizzling garlic aioli—every American’s dream meal. Of course, it was washed down with a Saint Basil’s spritz, the most popular drink of the night.

One must come to the American Supper Club and Cocktail Lounge with a large appetite to truly enjoy all their offerings. Each time you visit, you can go in an array of different directions. One night, you can choose a white wine, lobster ravioli, oysters and steak; another evening, white pizza, lamb bolognese and craft cocktails. The opportunities are endless, and the flavors are spectacular. Our only disclaimer is we recommend you take a car as they are generous with their pours and will inevitably make your evening a fun time. 710 W. 6th St., @statesmanatx
