With a new Eastside operation, Traveller Denim Co. meets custom and ready-to-wear demands from Austin men.
Selvege denim jacket, Traveller Denim Co. ($450).
Just a few years ago, Erik Untersee and Tony Brummer were lighting technicians who needed clothing that could stand up to their demanding jobs on film sets. Discouraged by the disposable-fashion epidemic, the two began sewing their own jeans. Now, they make bespoke and ready-to-wear men’s jeans (as well as jackets and shirts) right here in Austin for a devoted, nationwide customer base under the moniker Traveller Denim Co.
Tell us about Traveller’s evolution. Erik Untersee: Tony Brummer and I have been sourcing new machines and material for Traveller [since 2013]. We have spent the past year opening a small microfactory in East Austin that employs five people and handles all of our prototyping and production, from patterning to cutting and sewing. We continue to use vintage machines that range from the 1880s to the 1960s.
What styles are most popular? The underlying trend in Austin is definitely a quality fit. Something tailored to the body is going to inherently look good regardless of size, age, or background. Our Taper fit is hands-down the most popular of our ready-to-wear line.
From where do you source your materials? Every aspect of our ready-to-wear line is sourced in the USA, down to the rivets, thread, and garment labels. We also have Italian and Japanese fabrics for clients who choose the bespoke route. It’s important to us that all the raw materials we use are produced under fair working conditions and of the highest-quality material.
Can you recommend any constant classic styles? A good pair of five-pocket jeans is timeless. If they fit well and make the wearer feel good, then they will remain a staple for that person for years.
What’s on the horizon? Adding high-quality products to our line of locally produced garments and keeping it a unique interactive experience is our priority. Our brand will continue to evolve in the community, just like our product does as it wears, and fades, and gets better as it ages. 1403 Chestnut Ave., 512-220-9696
